ABOUT
Matt Nieland is a retired
U.S. Marine Corps intelligence officer and an avid history buff.
He infuses his military thrillers with action inspired by more than two decades of military service and multiple combat deployments.
His 25 year career in the military included 4 years in the Navy and 21 years in the Marine Corps. He served as both an enlisted Marine and an officer. While working in the Intelligence field his assignments have been varied and have included Signals Intelligence, Human Intelligence, Counterintelligence, and All Source Intelligence. In addition to the standard intelligence training he also trained in roles outside of the norm for intel personnel, including military parachuting, scuba diving, lock picking, survival behind enemy lines, and training with national level intelligence agencies. He has deployed around the world, including to war zones in Somalia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
His military experience combined with his passion for studying the past helps him bring history to life by showing his readers the inner lives of people from another era and in doing so illuminates history’s untold stories.
Matt’s life experiences have also helped shape his core beliefs. He believes that thoughts create reality and that the universe is always responding to our thoughts. Matt will tell you that we are who we become as the result of the thoughts we choose over and over again. Matt weaves this perspective into his stories which results in novels that are not only entertaining but also thought provoking.
When not writing, he’s an Intelligence Analysis Manager at a large defense contractor corporation. Matt calls Fredericksburg, Virginia home. He has been married to his best friend for over 30 years, and he and his wife have two adult children. He is an avid world traveler and outdoorsman who loves experiencing new cultures and learning their history. Matt loves to hear from his readers and welcomes questions and feedback.
